The Le Claires Way

The Le Claires Way

Le Claires was built around a simple belief: good businesses deserve good thinking.

Too many independent businesses are left with an unhelpful choice. They can try to work everything out themselves while running the day-to-day, or pay for specialist support that is expensive, overly complicated and often disconnected from what the business actually needs.

We wanted to offer something different.

Le Claires brings together commercial thinking, marketing expertise and practical delivery to help independent and founder-led businesses make better decisions, strengthen what they have built and move forward with greater confidence.

That sometimes means improving the marketing. It might mean rebuilding a website, clarifying the brand, developing a stronger customer journey or creating a more consistent approach to communication. But we never begin by assuming that marketing is the answer. We begin with the business.

We Start with Understanding

Every business has its own history, ambitions, pressures and possibilities. The right answer depends on where the business is now, where it wants to go and what is standing in the way.

That is why we start by listening.

We want to understand how the business works, where its revenue comes from, who its most valuable customers are, what has already been tried and which decisions are taking up the founder’s attention. We look at the whole picture before recommending what should happen next.

Sometimes the apparent problem is not the real problem. A business may think it needs more social media content when its positioning is unclear. It may consider investing in advertising when its website is not giving visitors enough confidence to act. It may plan a complete rebrand when the greater opportunity lies in improving customer retention.

Taking the time to understand these connections helps us focus attention and investment where they are most likely to make a meaningful difference.

Clear Thinking Before More Activity

Businesses are constantly being told they need to do more: publish more content, join another platform, invest in paid advertising, adopt a new system or follow the latest trend.

More activity can feel like progress, but it is not always productive.

We believe the first job is to create clarity. What is the business trying to achieve? Which customers matter most? What is preventing growth? What can the team realistically sustain? What evidence will tell us whether something is working?

Once those questions have been answered, the work becomes more focused. Instead of spreading time and money across a long list of disconnected activities, we can concentrate on the priorities that matter most.

Good strategy should make a business feel clearer, not more complicated. It should help people make decisions, understand the reasoning behind them and know what needs to happen next.

Advice That Can Be Put into Practice

A plan only has value if the business can act on it.

Le Claires sits between traditional business consultancy and a marketing agency. We help identify the right direction, but we can also roll up our sleeves and help turn that thinking into practical progress.

That might include improving a website, strengthening a customer journey, developing clearer messaging, building an email programme, planning content, supporting a launch or bringing several strands of activity into one coherent plan.

We do not want to leave clients with a polished document and another long list of things to manage. Our role is to help close the gap between deciding what needs to happen and making it happen.

Equally, we do not believe businesses should become unnecessarily dependent on us. We want clients to understand the work, retain control of their platforms and feel better equipped to make decisions for themselves. The best working relationships create capability as well as results.

Honest About What Is Worth Doing

We are not interested in selling work simply because we can deliver it.

If we believe a new website is unnecessary, we will say so. If advertising is unlikely to work until more fundamental issues are addressed, we will explain why. If the business would be better served by another specialist, a smaller intervention or doing nothing for the moment, we would rather be honest about that too.

This is not because we lack ambition. We are proudly commercial. We want Le Claires to be a successful and profitable business, and we want the same for every client we support.

But we believe our success should come from creating genuine value, not encouraging businesses to buy services they do not need. Trust is built by making recommendations that serve the business, even when the most useful answer is not the most lucrative one for us.

Built Around the Realities of Independent Business

Independent businesses operate differently from large companies. Decisions are often personal, resources are finite and the people setting the direction are usually involved in delivering the work too.

A founder may be thinking about cash flow, recruitment, marketing, customer retention and the future of the business in the same afternoon. They rarely need another complicated strategy or another group of specialists to coordinate. They need someone who can understand the wider picture, identify what matters and help move it forward.

We respect those realities.

Our recommendations consider the available time, budget, confidence and capacity within the business. There is little value in creating a plan that looks impressive but cannot be maintained once the initial enthusiasm has passed.

Sustainable growth does not mean moving slowly or avoiding ambition. It means building progress the business can support, making considered investments and strengthening the foundations needed for the next stage.

Serious Support for the Businesses That Shape Our Communities

Le Claires is based in Cambridge, a city celebrated for technology, life sciences, university spin-outs and rapidly scaling companies. Those businesses matter, but they are not the whole economy.

Independent shops, hospitality businesses, professional practices, makers, designers, publishers, service companies and family businesses also create jobs, support local suppliers and shape the character of the places where people live.

They are often expected to make do with less support, less attention and less access to serious commercial expertise. We do not think they should be.

Independent businesses deserve the same quality of thinking available to much larger organisations, delivered in a way that reflects their scale, circumstances and ambitions. Supporting them is not a charitable gesture. Strong independent businesses create distinctive places, resilient local economies and meaningful opportunities for the people around them.

We are proud to work with the people building those businesses.

Personal, Collaborative and Straightforward

Good work depends on good relationships.

We keep our approach personal because understanding develops through honest, ongoing conversations. Clients should be able to tell us when something does not feel right, ask questions without worrying about terminology and expect a clear answer in return.

We avoid unnecessary jargon, inflated promises and complexity for its own sake. We explain our thinking, invite challenge and remain open about what we know, what we need to investigate and what results can realistically be expected.

That does not mean every conversation is comfortable. Sometimes the most valuable thing we can do is question an assumption, identify an issue that has been avoided or recommend a different course from the one originally imagined.

We do that constructively and with respect for the person behind the business. The aim is never to prove that we are right. It is to help the business reach a better decision.

Progress That Means Something

Growth can take many forms. It might mean increasing revenue, improving profitability, attracting better-fit customers or creating more repeat business. It could mean entering a new market, strengthening the team, giving a founder more time or making the business more resilient.

The right definition depends on the business.

We are interested in progress that makes the company stronger, rather than activity that simply looks impressive from the outside. That means paying attention to commercial outcomes, but also recognising that not every valuable result appears immediately in a dashboard.

Clearer positioning can make future marketing more effective. A stronger website can give potential customers greater confidence. Better systems can release time. A more focused plan can prevent money being spent in the wrong place.

Our role is to understand what meaningful progress looks like for each business and help create the conditions for it.

That Is the Le Claires Way

We start with the business, not a predetermined solution. We ask questions, establish what matters and bring together the thinking and practical support needed to make progress.

We believe in clarity over noise, usefulness over activity and honest advice over easy answers. We want clients to understand what we are doing, why it matters and how it contributes to the wider business.

Most of all, we believe independent businesses deserve serious commercial support from people who care about what they are building.

That is the Le Claires way.

If your business has reached a point where the next move matters, but the right path is not yet clear, let’s have a conversation.
